Reverse Shoulder Replacement Surgery for Patients in New Albany, IN
Reverse shoulder replacement surgery is among our specialties at Louisville Orthopaedic Clinic—an independently owned orthopedic practice that has faithfully served residents of New Albany, Indiana, and surrounding communities since 1974. Our team includes board-certified orthopedic surgeons who excel in joint replacement procedures and utilize the latest muscle-sparing techniques to achieve optimal results with less post-operative discomfort. Let’s take a closer look at reverse shoulder replacement and when this procedure may be appropriate.
What Does Reverse Shoulder Replacement Surgery Involve?
The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint that is composed of the glenoid (the socket) and the top of the humerus bone (the ball). While traditional shoulder replacement restores the natural anatomy of the shoulder through joint implants, reverse shoulder replacement surgery switches the locations of the ball and socket implants. This means that the ball implant is placed in the glenoid, and the socket implant (similar to a small cup) is fixed to the top of the humerus bone.
Why is this done? When the ball and socket are switched, the arm becomes powered by the deltoid muscle instead of the rotator cuff. This approach is ideal for patients with severe rotator cuff injuries that cannot be repaired or lead to cuff tear arthropathy, a complex form of shoulder arthritis that does not respond well to traditional shoulder replacement.
Reverse shoulder replacement surgery may also be a treatment option for:
- Shoulder tumors
- Complex shoulder joint fractures
- Chronic shoulder dislocation
- Severe shoulder discomfort
