Shoulder Impingement Syndrome Treated in Louisville, KY

A relatively common musculoskeletal condition, shoulder impingement syndrome affects many athletes and other active individuals who perform repetitive overhead arm motions. Some examples include serving a tennis ball, swimming the butterfly stroke, and painting a ceiling. These activities can cause the rotator cuff—a key group of muscles and tendons in the shoulder—to repeatedly rub against the top of the upper arm bone (humerus) and the edge of the shoulder blade (acromion), leading to painful inflammation.

If you have shoulder pain, you can receive an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment at Louisville Orthopaedic Clinic in Louisville, Kentucky. Our board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons provide a full range of advanced treatments, including both surgical and nonsurgical options, for shoulder impingement and other musculoskeletal conditions.

How Is Shoulder Impingement Syndrome Treated?

At Louisville Orthopaedic Clinic, we emphasize conservative treatment whenever possible. Most of our patients who are diagnosed with shoulder impingement syndrome benefit from a combination of:

  • A short period of rest
  • Temporary avoidance of overhead arm motions
  • Physical therapy to strengthen the muscles that support the shoulder
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce painful inflammation
  • Corticosteroid injections

To address severe or persistent symptoms that do not respond to nonsurgical treatment, we may suggest arthroscopic surgery to help stabilize the shoulder joint and relieve pressure on the rotator cuff tendons.
