Experienced Hip Arthroscopy Surgeon Practicing Near Floyds Knobs, IN

Hip arthroscopy, or a “hip scope,” is a minimally invasive procedure that allows a surgeon to diagnose the cause of hip pain by closely examining the interior of the joint without making a long incision. In some cases, the surgeon can treat the condition during the same procedure. To achieve the best possible outcome from this complex surgery, a surgeon must have both specialized skills and extensive experience.

One of the few hip arthroscopy specialists in the Louisville area is Ryan B. Eads, MD. Dr. Eads is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who practices at Louisville Orthopaedic Clinic near Floyds Knobs, Indiana. Dr. Eads specializes in the latest techniques in minimally invasive sports medicine surgery, including arthroscopic labral repairs, and he truly shines as a hip arthroscopy surgeon.

What Does Hip Arthroscopy Involve?

Hip arthroscopy is usually performed under general anesthesia. After making a small incision in the hip, Dr. Eads inserts a flexible, fiber-optic tube with a miniature camera attached to the end (arthroscope). Using the arthroscope, he captures highly detailed images of the joint, which are displayed in real-time on a nearby monitor while he operates.

Since the advent of hip arthroscopy in the late 1980s, groundbreaking advances have been made in surgical techniques and equipment, allowing today’s surgeons to arthroscopically treat some conditions that previously required open surgery or were considered to be untreatable. When treating a hip condition arthroscopically, Dr. Eads may make one or two additional small incisions in the hip to create access points for special surgical tools.

Some hip conditions that can be diagnosed and treated arthroscopically include:

  • Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI)
  • Labral tears
  • Loose cartilage fragments floating in the joint
  • Joint lining inflammation
  • Painful bone spurs

In some cases, hip arthroscopy can also be used to preemptively treat osteoarthritis and ultimately delay or eliminate the need for a hip replacement. As compared to traditional hip surgery, this advanced procedure typically offers many advantages, including less post-operative pain, fewer complications, a shorter recovery, and minimal scarring.
