If you’re ready to explore your treatment options for bothersome heel pain, turn to the board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons at Louisville Orthopaedic Clinic in Louisville, Kentucky. We know that heel pain can diminish your quality of life and make it difficult or impossible to run, walk, and perhaps even stand. Our skilled foot and ankle specialists take a personalized approach to treatment. After reviewing your symptoms, performing a physical exam, and possibly evaluating an X-ray, we will work closely with you to eliminate your pain and help you resume your active lifestyle.

Why Does Your Heel Hurt?

Because your heel bone sustains a significant amount of pressure while supporting the entire weight of your body whenever you are upright, heel pain is common and often a result of overuse. The team at Louisville Orthopaedic Clinic is experienced in treating a wide range of medical issues that could affect the heel, including:

  • Achilles tendinitis – Chronic inflammation of the Achilles tendon, a strong band of tissue that connects the calf muscle to the heel bone
  • Heel spurs – Bony growths that develop on the underside of the heel bone
  • Plantar fasciitis – Inflammation of the thick band of tissue (fascia) that connects the heel bone to the toes
  • Bursitis – Swelling of a fluid-filled sac (bursa) at the back of the heel bone under the Achilles tendon

How Is Heel Pain Treated?

We emphasize conservative therapy for heel pain whenever possible. In many cases, treatment involves a combination of rest, physical therapy, ice pack applications, medication, custom orthotics, splinting, and/or injections. To address severe or persistent heel pain, we may suggest a surgical procedure, such as a plantar fasciotomy.

I was able to get a office visit on short notice. It seemed to be a very busy day. Rebecca took the time to listen to all of my issues and discuss a plan for additional treatment. I have always been impressed with her knowledge and bed side manner.
