What Is Triple Arthrodesis?
Triple arthrodesis is a surgical procedure that fuses together three important joints located in the back of the foot (hindfoot). These joints include the:
- Talonavicular joint, formed by the bottom portion of the ankle joint and the navicular bone directly in front of it
- Subtalar joint, composed of the talus bone beneath the ankle and the heel bone (calcaneus)
- Calcaneocuboid joint, made up of the heel bone and cuboid bone toward the outside of the foot
During triple arthrodesis, a surgeon removes worn cartilage and addresses damage on joint surfaces, including filling in defects with bone grafts. Once the joint surfaces are prepared for fusion, hardware is strategically positioned to “lock” the bones together and enhance stability within the foot.
When Is Triple Arthrodesis Necessary?
The goal of triple arthrodesis surgery is to relieve severe foot pain caused by problems like arthritis, flatfoot, joint instability from neuromuscular conditions, and multiple other foot deformities that may be present at birth or develop over time. When successful, this procedure can significantly reduce pain, enhance mobility, and improve quality of life.
It’s important to note that triple arthrodesis is rarely a patient’s first course of treatment. Most physicians recommend that patients explore all nonsurgical options, such as bracing and orthotics, physical therapy, medication, and behavior modifications, before considering surgery. If foot pain and dysfunction persist, triple arthrodesis or another surgical approach may then be considered.
