When Is Cubital Tunnel Syndrome Surgery Recommended?
Cubital tunnel syndrome (ulnar nerve entrapment) occurs when the ulnar nerve becomes compressed by the cubital tunnel as it runs through the elbow. The cubital tunnel is a narrow passageway of tissue located on the inside of the elbow, just under the boney bump that’s often referred to as the “funny bone.”
Many cases of cubital tunnel syndrome can be effectively managed with conservative methods like bracing, anti-inflammatory medication, and a routine of nerve-gliding exercises. However, cubital tunnel syndrome surgery may be recommended to patients with disruptive symptoms that do not improve with conservative treatment.
During cubital tunnel release surgery, the ligaments that make up the “roof” of the tunnel are cut to take pressure off of the ulnar nerve. Less commonly, surgery may be performed to adjust the placement of the nerve or to remove a portion of surrounding bone.
